Lower dolpo trek is a remote and isolated area of western part of Nepal and trek to lower dolpo is possible even in Monsoon season where it rains less in raining season due to rain shadow area formed by Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountain ranges. The trek begins at STOL airstrip of Juphal a short flight from Nepalgunj.
The trek offers adventure trekking on remote and rugged natural unspoiled corner simply beyond the Himalayan valleys across western Nepal. The Dolpo region (both upper and lower area) preserves one of the last remnants of traditional Tibetan culture where the pre-Buddhist Bon-Po religion is still in practice. High mountains including the Dhaulagiri massif to the southeast surround this spiritual sanctuary. The Dolpo region provides the opportunities to visit ancient villages, high passes, beautiful Lakes, isolated Buddhist monasteries and also to experience the vast array of wildlife inhabiting the region in Nepal.
Lower Dolpo trekking region has its own charm, people here still leads a primitive life, yet they are friendly. The trail goes over three high passes, the Kagmara La [5115m], Baga La [5090m] and Numa La [5360m] passing the deep-blue tranquil Phoksumdo Lake and finally concludes at Juphal descending the gorge-side path of Tarap Khola.Dolpo region preserved Eco-system encompasses a wild and wonderful variety of flora and fauna, including Blue sheep, Mountain Goat, Jackal, Wolf and the legendary Snow Leopard. Dolpo is remains a truly isolated corner of Nepal, time has stood still here for centuries as inhabitants of Tibetan stock continues to live, cultivate and trade the way they have done for hundreds of years. The east and south of it is bordered by the Dhaulagiri and Churen Himal ranges and to the west by Jumla district. Lower Dolpo trekking offers you the remarkable and worthwhile experience of lifetime and altitude ranges from 2500m to 5,190m. Dolpo region has given birth of Peter Matthiessens masterpiece and best selling book Snow Leopards and Eric Vallis Oscar nominated movie CARAVAN (also known HIMALAYA) was featured in this isolated Himalayan sanctuary.
A physically fit person can do this trip anytime in April to October. November can be a bit risky as the passes are covered by the snow.
